Back-to-School Lunch Ideas: Let Kids Choose Their Lunches + Free Printable

A mom helps her smiling daughter put a packed lunchbox into her backpack as they get ready for school.

Back-to-school lunch prep can be a lot easier when kids help make the decisions.

Instead of figuring out what everyone wants every morning, let kids choose their lunches for the school week.

It’s a simple activity that gives them some independence, helps you know what they’ll actually eat, and makes grocery shopping a whole lot easier.

Start With the Lunch Choices

Give kids a few choices in each category.

Choose a Main

  • Turkey sandwich
  • Ham & cheese
  • PB&J
  • Cheese & crackers
  • Chicken wrap

Choose a Snack

  • Pretzels
  • Crackers
  • Popcorn
  • Yogurt
  • Granola bar

Choose a Fruit

  • Strawberries
  • Grapes
  • Apple slices
  • Orange
  • Blueberries

Choose a Treat

  • Cookie
  • Fruit snacks
  • Mini muffin
  • Graham crackers
  • Chocolate chips

Choose a Veggie

  • Carrots
  • Cucumbers
  • Bell peppers
  • Celery
  • Cherry tomatoes

You don’t have to use these exact foods. Choose options your family already enjoys and foods that fit the way you normally shop and prepare meals.

Choose How Your Kids Pick

There are two easy ways to do this, depending on how much variety you want during the week.

🍎 One Time Each

List 5 different options for each category and let kids mix and match to create their lunches for the week.

Once a choice has been chosen for a day, it can’t be chosen again.

For example, if your child chooses a turkey sandwich for Monday, they’ll need to pick something different for Tuesday.

This is a great option if you want to encourage a little more variety in your kids’ lunches. It’s also a fun way to introduce foods to picky eaters. Sometimes kids just need to see or try a food a few times before they’re ready to like it. Let them pair something they’re not sure about with something they already love, and you can relax knowing there’s at least one thing in their lunch you know they’ll eat.

❤️ Repeat Your Favorites

List 5 different options for each category and let kids mix and match their lunches however they want.

The difference? They can choose the same option more than once.

If your child wants a turkey sandwich on Monday and Thursday, that’s perfectly fine. If strawberries are their favorite fruit and they want them three days in a row, go for it!

This is a great option for kids who know exactly what they like—or for families who would rather keep lunch simple than worry about having something different every day.

Both ways work. Just choose the approach that fits your family best.

I’ve made a free lunch choice printable to make the activity even easier.

Kids can use it to choose their lunches for Monday through Friday, and you can keep it handy while you’re shopping and prepping.

Print one for each child, give them a pencil, and let them make their choices.

You can use:

  • Homemade muffins or store-bought muffins
  • Homemade granola bars or packaged ones
  • Freshly baked bread or your favorite sandwich bread
  • Homemade cookies or a package from the store
  • Cut-up fruit or ready-to-eat fruit cups

The goal is to make lunch choice easier.

Prep the Lunches

Once the choices are made and you’ve done your shopping, put the lunches together before the school week begins.

We like these 3 compartment containers

Divided meal-prep containers are especially handy for this because you can portion out the different parts of the lunch ahead of time and keep everything together. Send two of the three compartment containers each day. You can check out our post on 20 lunchbox notes, and use the extra container space to leave a note to brighten their day.

When the school morning gets busy, there’s no need to stop and negotiate lunch. The decision has already been made. The kids helped choose it. And you’ve already bought what you need. It’s a small routine that gives kids some ownership while taking one more decision off your plate.

Try It With Your Family

You can change the choices from week to week, add new foods, or let kids vote on what gets added to the menu. And if you have a child who wants the same lunch every day? That’s okay too.

The best lunch plan is the one your family will actually use.

Choose it. Shop for it. Prep it. Pack it. And one less back-to-school decision is already handled.
